The purest air in Europe, 300 days of sunshine per year, an air dry and hot, the evening breeze of the Haute Provence, the quiet calm of olive groves and fields of lavender: you are at the crossroads of the regional national parks of the Luberon, the Baronnies of Provence, Verdon and the Reserve Geological of the Haute Provence, at the foot of the Mount Lure.
It is in this unique setting of our region that you can find sports activities, astronomy, and cultural and historical visits. The local products and gastronomy will make your mouth water!
If you cannot think, walk. If you think too much, walk. If you think badly, walk more (Jean Giono).
Rambling and hiking: your host Lucie can take you on rambles or walks on the local paths in the region, lasting a few hours or a few days. The Alps of the Haute Provence offer 5000 Km of sign-posted paths of which 800 Km are the long walks GR (Grandes Randonnées), 700 Km of local walks GRs and 3500 Km of short hikes PR (Petites Randonnées). In the spring you can walk between wild peonies, southern tulips and fragrant woodruffs. In summer you may wander between the lavender bushes and the secret places where you may find shade and coolness. In autumn nature becomes flamboyant. In winter you may surprise some chamois whilst skiing or walking with snow shoes before returning home to a hot chocolate by the fireside.
Take the "Ronde des jas" path , which leaves directly from the house (a 3 to 4 hour walk of 9Km and easily accessible for children), it takes you past many old stone built shepherds huts ("jas"), relics of the pastoral traditions of this region.
Another extraordinary place in geological terms with its impressive landscapes is only 30 minutes away: the Geopark of Haute Provence.
Why not initiate your children to camping in the countryside or spending the evening around a camp fire?
We can lend you maps and advise you on any walks or rambles.
Bikes and mountain bikes: Cruis is a stopover place on the mountain bike route of the Alps of Haute Provence. We also find ourselves between two mountain bike bases (Valley of the Durance and the Forcalquier - Mount Lure area) which has nearly 500 Km of circuits and thirty tracks for all biker skill levels.
You can also cycle off (early in the morning of course!) directly on the country roads from the house with or without electric motor assistance ( http://www.easyveloelectric.fr).
Horse-riding : for horse lovers, we recommend the riding centers Le Rocher d'Ongle at 12 Km distance or the Centre de Randonnée Equestre Janssaud at 15 Km.
Canyoning, rafting and white water sports: in the rivers or stretches of river close to our house you can practice canyoning or white water sports: the river Durance , and lower part of the Buech, the Asse and the Bléone when there is plenty of water flowing.
A bit further away, in the Ubaye, Verdon, and Var rivers you will find in these three giants the pleasures of canoeing, kayaking, rafting, swimming in white water, canyoning, and don't forget the network of "clues" ( 50 steep valleys with water pools for bathing).
Whilst not forgetting the trout fishing in all of these well stocked rivers.
Bathing: the clear waters of the Méouge gorge and the Trévans invite you to swim. Less than 15 Km from our bastide at Sisteron the open waters of "Les Marres" 5000 m2 is reserved for bathing, there is also an area for skate boarding and a health and fitness open air circuit. The Buissonnades at Oraison ( 30 minutes from us, three small lakes totalling 18 hectares) where you may swim or fish, there is also a botanical path walk.
Aerial sports: for those who practice delta-planing, paragliding, gliding, or ULM, the Alps of Haute Provence offer glorious views and landscapes throughout the year.
Climbing and "via ferrata" ("iron ways" with metal pegs and wire or chain assistance for climbing): 600 routes are open in Haute Provence at all levels of difficulty. Another activity giving strong sensations are climbing the 3 "iron ways" in the region. These sports can be practiced all year round due to our sunny environment.
Skiing and snow-shoes: in the mountains so dear to Giono, the Mount Lure ski resort, 10 Km from Cruis, as the crow flies, is a family resort with exceptional panoramic views. A place to learn to ski easily but also a starting point for Nordic skiing or walking with snow-shoes. This station is situated between 1600 and 1850m altitude.
Astronomy: for the astronomy buffs we have built two solid bases for your telescopes (with electricity supply points). The skies of Cruis are reputed for their clarity. The Astronomical Society of Mount Lure or the Observatory of Saint-Michel will help you to explore further and propose numerous srar gazing activities.
